Your Body and pH Balance


There's no doubt that maintaining a healthy alkaline pH is critical to good health and even life itself. Medical doctor Arthur Guyton, editor of the Textbook of Medical Physiology was quite clear on this point:

"The first step in maintaining health is to alkalize the body. The cells of a healthy body are alkaline while the cells of a diseased body are acidic. Since our bodies do not manufacture alkalinity, we must supply the alkalinity from an outside source to keep us from being acidic and dying."

"The cells of a healthy body are alkaline while the cells of a diseased body are below a pH of 7.0. The more acidic the cell, the sicker we become. If the body cannot alkalize the cells they will become acidic and thus, disease sets in. Most cells will die in the 3.5 pH range. Our bodies produce acid as a by-product of normal metabolism. What is pH?

pH stands for potential hydrogen. Some natural health practitioners also like to say it stands for potential health because proper pH is so important to how our body functions. pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, or how much hydrogen is available.

The pH scale goes from 1 to 14, and 7 is neutral. (Pure water is neutral.) Below 7 pH is acidic, above 7 pH is alkaline. The pH scale is logarithmic; each change of one unit (from 7 to 6 pH for instance) is a change of 10 times more or less hydrogen. For example, the difference between a pH of 3.0 and 7.0 is 10,000 times more acidic at 3.0 pH. The difference between a pH 9.0 and 4.0 is 100,000 times more alkaline at 9.0. A change in blood pH from 7.365 to 7.0 means that your blood is 4 times more acidic than normal!

When we measure the pH of a substance, we are measuring the number of hydroxyl ions (OH-) compared to the number of hydrogen ions (H+). Hydroxyl ions are alkaline, hydrogen ions are acidic.

Since your body is, on average, 70% water, you can picture it as your personal inner ocean. This fluid of life is distributed throughout the body in two main compartments: Intracellular (inside the cell) and extracellular (outside the cell). These two compartments must be pH balanced for digestion, enzyme activity and metabolic functions to occur, for energy to be produced, for life itself to continue.

It is critical to human life for the pH of the blood to stay in a very narrow range of 7.365 and 7.43. The body will do anything it can to keep the pH of the blood at the optimum pH because if it drops to below 7 pH, it can cause a coma state and even death. Because of the logarithmic scale of pH, this seemingly small change represents a four times more acidic state. Thus, the blood varies little from the proper pH. To maintain the ability to buffer acids in the blood, the body calls on mineral stores in our organs and bones – the body will damage its own organs before it lets the blood pH become acidic. Chronic long-term over-acidity accelerates aging of our internal organs and tissues. While the blood pH remains in a tight alkaline range, the rest of the fluids surrounding our cells and tissues can become more acidic. Many health experts believe that in such an internal environment, beneficial microforms will die and aggressive microforms, sustained by an acidic environment, begin to multiply and mutate, becoming parasitic and pathogenic agents. This may explain why over-acidity is related to decreased resistance to colds, flu and upper respiratory and gastro-intestinal illnesses.

Many people in North America live with mildly acidic internal pH, known as chronic mild acidosis. When the body is chronically over-acidic, the balancing mechanisms force the body to borrow minerals – calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium – from the internal organs and bones so acids can be buffered or neutralized and removed from the body. Signs of pH Imbalance

Why be concerned about pH? Because an imbalance in the body's pH may lead to numerous everyday health concerns. Early signs of pH imbalance include:
